Charitable Giving and Sustainable Development
Founded in 2014 Solar Village Project is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to addressing the issues of energy poverty and climate change in the developing world. Over 1 billion people still lack adequate access to electricity. We address this problem by working with off grid and under served rural communities by providing them with solar power. Studies have shown that solar lighting increases general economic productivity for adults after dark and on average children study for 2 hours more per night when compared to homes without access to electricity. In the communities we have worked with solar power has had a profoundly positive impact on people’s lives allowing for greater economic productivity for adults after dark and enabling kids to study.
Solar lighting is an important first step on the energy access ladder.
Access to solar lighting not only has a positive impact on a families economic stability and children’s education, it also helps create a safer and cleaner environment through the displacement of kerosene lanterns, a major contributor to indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution from using combustible fuels like kerosene lanterns caused 4.3 million deaths in 2012 alone, with women and girls accounting for 6 out of every 10 of these.
