The Solar Village Project Social Enterprise
In 2020, Solar Village Project officially launched our microfinance initiative to raise $500,000 over the next 5 years (5 for 5) to support the distribution of solar lights In rural villages. Funds from this campaign will create a revolving loan fund to help those in the poorest regions of the world obtain solar lights.
Our goal is to help thousands of households and small enterprises gain access to clean energy by building a self-sustaining solar service and distribution network in rural communities. Clean energy lifts people out of poverty and the cost of owning it should not be a barrier for those who can least afford it. The 5 for 5 microfinance initiative to raise $500,000 over 5 years will create a mechanism so that the poorest villagers can obtain the development, entrepreneurial and educational benefits of solar lights for their families. Based on our own research, we know that up to 70% of rural villagers may choose to purchase solar lanterns outright.
This solar sales and finance enterprise will use cutting edge 2g and 3g enabled solar technology for remote monitoring, service and data collection. SVP’s goal is to provide financing for solar lights so that consumers can choose:
-How to finance the purchase of their equipment
-The amount of energy they will use through a process similar to cell phone data plans, and;
-Where to get help if a light stops working.
Through data collection, SVP can better understand how solar lights are being used and gain important feedback for future projects.
Given SVP’s long track record in rural Indian villages — and an estimated 30 million people who still live without reliable access to electricity — this will be the first country where the microfinance funds are deployed. However, our long-term goal is to use this sustainable development model in Africa and other developing nations around the world.
Through the 5 for 5 campaign, we can provide clean, reliable and sustainable energy — and a level of service — that greatly benefits energy impoverished communities. This social enterprise will diversify SVP’s work beyond charitable giving of solar lanterns to include a sustainable development model that further empowers the consumer.
Our goal is to raise $100,000 within the first year in order to launch this microfinance social enterprise — and we are almost halfway there. With your help, we can:
-Combat climate change and leapfrog dirty fossil fuel development;
– Provide up to 8 hours of extra light for education and entrepreneurial activities — including cell phone charging inside the home;
–Avoid the use of dangerous kerosene lanterns that cause lung disease and terrible burns in children, and;
– Empower those who can least afford it with the gift of clean energy that is consumer-driven.With your help, we can do all of this for as little as $25 per villager for a solar lantern!
SVP can do all of this for as little as $25 per villager for a solar lantern. Please join us in the life-saving 5 for 5 solar campaign by contributing a minimum of $25 today — the cost of a solar light!
